Once your new website is live, it is important to begin the process of search engine submission. Search engine submission will begin the process of submitting your site URL to the many search engines available. When you add your link through search engine submission process, you will begin to experience growth in your "Link Popularity". Search Engine submission does not directly lead to Link Popularity, but it does notify the search engines that you are "there" and that your site is basically ready.
Search Engine Submission
The bigger search engines will find your site eventually anyway, but it helps to submit your site a little bit earlier than you plan on being "live" by about 1-2 weeks. Once you have gone through the search engine submission process, your website will be queued up for a visit, but it will not be visited immediately! The search engine "spiders" will visit your site (referred to as a "crawl") and begin to scan and analyze your content ("indexing"). Now, exactly where your site shows up in the search results for any given word/phrase is a different matter entirely. After you have gone through the search engine submission process, your site will show up where that particular search engine thinks it should rank in relation to other websites that also happen to be competing for a similar keyword/keyphrase. This relational ranking depends entirely on that particular search engine's ranking algorithm. This is a highly complex mathematical formula which is proprietary information and not available to the general public.
Consider, that if some person knew precisely how the search engines worked to rank a site (particularly the larger search engines) then it would be entirely too easy to "outwit" the system and power your way to the top for ANY word/phrase with absolutely zero effort.
No; search engines are way more complex than that, and to provide relevant results, the ranking algorithm prevents it from begin "too easy" to rank well for all but the most obscure terms. You also have to consider that your competition has likely been online much, much longer than you have, and you have some ground to make up.
Search Engine Page Rank
So, to begin to rank well, you submit to the search engines and add your site URL link to the search engine submission pages of your choice, and once you have gone through website submission you should also look into directory submission.
Link Directory
Directory submission is a good way to increase link popularity. This link popularity is also referred to as "page rank" although When most people refer to "Page Rank" they are typically referring to Google's proprietary ranking algorithm which weighs sites on a 0-10 scale. Link Popularity on the other hand is more general, and while some would disagree, link popularity is widely agreed to have a large attribution to a page's position in the results for any given search term, regardless of the search engine.
Link Popularity
There are many ways to increase link popularity. There is link directory submission, for example. Link directory submission often requires a link back TO the directory site. Link exchanges are considered to be mutually beneficial, and can help increase link popularity for your own site, as well as the link popularity for the link directory site. Submitting your site to a link directory will deliver a back link to your site in exchange for a link back to the directory. It is unlikely that you will get direct traffic from the link directory itself, but it is very likely that the link popularity gained from that directory will help boost your rankings for any given search term, which in turn WILL improve your site's positioning on the search engines.
Link Exchanges
Link exchanges are usually done from within similar "niche" sites to help boost link popularity for both websites. A link exchange website will require a link back, but this is sort of the point. There will be lots of websites that are related to your own, but serve different markets. Typically it is ok to exchange links with those sites because even though they are in a similar industry, they may serve an entirely different customer base. Local business can benefit from link exchanges with other local businesses, for example, if those other businesses serve a different location. There would be no conflict as they would be serving distinct customer bases. Link exchanges between those sites would be a terrific way to boost traffic for both sites and over time will increase link popularity for both websites.
Link Directory Submission
It is pretty rare to find a directory submission website that will give a free link back to your website. Most directory submission sites are also link exchange sites. Directory submission sites can also be "paid" in which case you may not necessarily be required to link back to the directory submission website, but these can be costly and only used if your marketing budget allows. Since you are not returning a link back to the site (one-way link) the page rank gained from such a site would be more favorable than that gained through a link exchange site.
For the most part, it is ok to focus on link exchange sites, as they are typically free but can take some time due to manual review and ensuring that you have, in fact, returned a link back to the link exchange site. The manual review also helps the link exchange site ensure that your own site provides somewhat quality content.
